What's Inside:
Designing the perfect hair salon means more than just choosing the right chairs and mirrors — it’s about creating a space that works for your clients, your team, and your services. In this guide, we’ll break down the essentials of hair salon design, layout planning, and how to make the most of your space, whether you’re opening your first salon or refreshing an existing setup.

Before thinking about layout and styling, it’s important to make sure your salon has the practical infrastructure you need:
Good water pressure – Ideally 1.75 to 2.5 bar minimum
Power points – Accessible sockets for clippers, dryers, straighteners
Wash areas – Either in-studio or nearby (private bathroom/kitchen access)
Natural light – Great for colour visibility and ambiance
Privacy – Use window films, curtains, or partitions if street-facing
Space – Room for chairs, waiting area, and reception desk
(For example, 1.5m behind each chair for stylist movement)
Smart hair salon layout blends practical flow with client comfort and atmosphere. Here’s how to think through your design:
Your welcome area sets the tone.
Include a check-in point or small reception desk
Allow space for coats, bags, and guests waiting
Make sure it feels calm and welcoming on entry
There’s no strict rule — 3 stations is common in small salons.
Allow at least 1m from any wall or window
Keep 1.5m clear behind the chair for stylists to move freely
Floating or wall-mounted styling units help maximise space and keep the floor clear for easy cleaning.
You can mix colours at the chair or in a designated colour area. Screens or a back-room setup help keep things discreet and safe.
Whether it’s built-in or portable, you’ll need a dedicated zone for washing and rinsing. Consider plumbing access and flooring.
Add layered lighting for atmosphere and precision
Large, lit mirrors add a feeling of space and brightness
Comfortable, durable salon chairs
Extra seating for stylists and guests
Use easy-to-clean materials — colour spills happen
Layout will depend on space and services offered. Here are three of the most common options — each designed around 3 stations for easy comparison.
Stations are lined up along one wall.
Keeps the centre clear for movement
Works well in narrow rooms
Ideal for barbers and salons with compact setups
Leaves room for shelving or seating opposite
Stations are grouped in a back or side corner.
Creates a defined service area
Allows for a separate welcome/reception zone
Maximises natural light if near windows
Works well with a wash area in another corner
A block of stations sits in the centre of the room.
Use mirrors or divider walls in the middle
Efficient use of square rooms
Provides space around edges for colour prep, wash zones, storage
Ideal for salons that want a balanced flow between stations and other zones
These layouts can be adapted for 2, 4, or more stations depending on your salon’s scale.
